My first enlightenment about lawyers came when I started my first business. When I went to incorporate I had to register the name of the business with the state. I talked to a friend who had incorporated before and he told me how you have to get a lawyer, and it costs a bunch of money, and it takes a least a week for them to back to you. Then another friend pointed me in the direction of a form on how exactly to do it yourself. In the end all I had to do was call a phone number, and ask someone from the state to "check on the availability of a corporate name." Then they told whether it was still available. Simple.
My point is this: Lawyers make a lot of money from just knowing the system, knowing exactly what the right words are. If you can find out that information without actually having to consult a lawyer, or have a lawyer do it for you, you can save a lot of money.
This brings me to legal forms. I once spent an entire day trying to put together a contract. I knew what was expected of me, the client knew what they wanted, but getting it in the right terms, so it actually means something, was close to impossible. I didn't need a fancy contract, just one that was legally sound.
There are a lot of needs in this range. Non-disclosure forms, bill of sale, power of attorney, pre-nuptial agreement , people often don't need a custom made form, just something that is legally sound.
Now, thanks to the internet companies and individuals can save lots of time and money by having these forms available all in one place.
Lawyers do have their place, but if all you need is a legal form than don't pay an arm and a leg to get them. My personal favourite site is called Legal Messenger; they have a great variety of sound legal documents at fair prices.
