What is a Contingency Fee?

Posted in on

A contingency fee is a fee payable only if the outcome is successful. Some attorneys are willing to work on a 'contingency fee basis'. In this instance, you do not pay legal fees unless and until you have a successful outcome and then your attorney receives a percentage of the money you receive which you have agreed upon in advance. There would be no legal fee paid to your attorney if the outcome of your case is unsuccessful.

This contingency fee agreement allows people who have been injured as a result of an automobile accident or a medical malpractice case to obtain legal representation even when they do not have the resources to hire an attorney at the outset of the case.

Accident and personal injury litigation is most commonly handled on a contingency fee basis. When you are injured due to another person's negligence or carelessness, you have a legal right to be compensated for the damages and losses you have suffered. Many attorneys will represent injured people on a contingency fee basis which means you can hire an attorney without paying by the hour. The attorney will only get paid if you receive money from the responsible party who caused your injuries. A contingency fee arrangement makes quality legal representation affordable and accessible to all.

Attorneys take the risk in the beginning to share in the rewards in the end. Attorneys put in thousands of hours of work and thousands of dollars in costs to prepare your case for trial. The law firm you choose to work for you on a contingency fee basis should have the experience and financial resources to pursue and win your claim.

Contingency fees do not apply to criminal cases.
